Hiring a Freelance Data Center Expert

A Data Center Consultant is a professional who will help address specific challenges an organization is facing related to the data center. The objective can be purely technical, such as to improve a datacenter’s capacity, efficiency or suitability, but it can also be to help make strategic choices for an organization, such as whether to build a new enterprise data center on a premise or to migrate infrastructure to the cloud.

Why and when do you need a data center expert?

Whenever:

  • Your DC is outdated and no longer meets your requirements in terms of availability, capacity or flexibility
  • Your DC has power or cooling problems
  • Your organisation’s DC landscape has grown out of control due to organic growth or by mergers and acquisitions
  • You plan new business services requiring the deployment of significant new IT outscaling your existing DC capacity
  • Your want to reduce your overall DC cost
  • You want to reduce your environmental footprint
  • You want to understand if moving to the cloud can be beneficial for you

Why:

  • A DC Expert is able to provide end-to-end expertise with regards to the technical aspects of designing, building and operating a DC that can meet your organisation’s requirements
  • A DC Expert helps you make sound decision in terms of datacenters and cloud (delivery model, provider selection, location, technology choices, etc)
  • A DC Expert provides overall insight in your datacenter landscape, spanning across the many technical aspects, and how they impact your organisation’s success

The total amount of data created and consumed globally is estimated at 64.2 zettabytes in 2020. Over the next five years, global data creation is projected to grow to more than 180 zettabytes. And most of this data is processed in … data centers, making them more important than ever before.

Challenge, Context, Problems to be solved

This client needed an answer to their question of where to host and run their three environments: in their own data centers, in a private cloud, in the public cloud (IaaS/PaaS/SaaS), or using a combination of all these.

Due to a recent company merger, the organization found itself operating three distinct IT environments, each with their own functional and non-functional requirements. While some level of merging and standardization was taking place, they needed objective expert advice on how to shape their future DC landscape, looking at multiple aspects such as ability to support critical business processes, cost and manageability.

Mission, tools and methodology

A DC Expert was brought on board to develop a data center strategy. The expert started by capturing the critical business processes the data center needed to support and by translating these into requirements for the data center. He then identified all possible alternatives and evaluated them using jointly agreed criteria derived from the client’s business requirements. He also developed a financial business case to provide insight into the financial aspects of the alternatives.

Achieved results

The new landscape allowed the client to save €1.1M on operations every year, while at the same time simplifying the way they could meet their requirements in terms of security and business continuity.

Based on this information, the expert was able to state a recommendation on how the future DC landscape should be shaped, supported by sound technical and financial arguments. This allowed the client’s project sponsor to convince the stakeholders about the data center strategy and to move forward with the implementation, which entailed major changes to the way they were doing things before.

Must have skills for a Data Center Expert

With technological evolution this role has evolved significantly over the last couple of years, and will continue doing so. It requires expertise in many technical areas such as:

  • Architectural design
  • Power provisioning systems
  • Cooling systems
  • Rack systems
  • Networking & connectivity (cabling systems, 5G, global subsea fibers)
  • Monitoring systems (BMS, SIEM, virtual twin technology, etc)
  • Physical security systems (access control, fire protection, intrusion detection, etc)
  • IT operations
  • Cloud computing (cloud technology as well as shifting trends in global usage)
  • High performance computing
  • Big data, data analytics, artificial intelligence and machine learning
  • Internet-of-things

To be successful, a DC Expert should also have business insights to take into account aspects such as:

  • Business continuity
  • Compliance
  • Energy efficiency, carbon accounting
  • Finance
  • Information security
  • Risk management

In some cases, the role of a DC consultant can evolve from a technical expert to a business advisor.
